Dear Friends,
I’ve just returned from a few days that reminded me why I love Iowa summers — sunshine, storms, and surprises all in one trip. We camped at Coralville Dam West Overlook, just a short drive from Lake McBride. Our little home-away-from-home mixed camper comfort with tent simplicity, anchored by a screened canopy that became my refuge from the buzzing, biting crowd (mosquitoes, not people). From our spot, I could see the playground, hear the dam’s low hum, and sink into that slow camping rhythm.
Mornings Wrapped in Rain
Some days began under gray skies, with rain tapping gently before thunder and lightning rolled in. I’d sip coffee inside, warm and dry, as the sky put on its show. The sound of rain on the roof of the camper was soothing, a soft reminder of nature's rhythm. It was the perfect excuse to slow down, enjoy a good book, or watch the world outside transform.
In fact, did you know that spending time in nature can increase your mood by as much as 50 percent? That’s why those rainy mornings felt special, as if the universe was inviting us to pause and appreciate the moment.
Fishing Without the Fish
We spent some time casting into the still, blue waters, but we caught… nothing. However, the quiet between casts was its own reward. Fishing at Lake McBride is less about the catch and more about the experience. The serenity of the water, the rustle of leaves, and the occasional splash of a fish create a peaceful backdrop.
Even without a fish on the line, it was not a wasted effort; the laughter and stories shared made the time priceless.
Wild Company
One of the highlights was seeing a lone white pelican drift by gracefully across the water. Geese flew in formation above us, while curious ducks swam close, eying us as if they were tiny inspectors. Nature has a way of surprising us and this trip was no exception.
Watching that pelican effortlessly glide reminded me of the beauty often unnoticed in our busy lives. The diverse wildlife around Lake McBride added an extra layer of magic, enhancing our camping adventure.

The Duck & the Sandcastle
One sunny afternoon, we built a sandcastle on the beach. Ducks waddled up, circling like tiny inspectors, before wandering away without comment. The beach at Lake McBride is a perfect spot for families to enjoy fun under the sun and build sandcastles.
This classic activity brings out the child in all of us. Moments like these, where laughter echoes against the backdrop of the lake, are what camping is all about.
The “Sighting”
I even thought I spotted Bigfoot — until the hulking shape turned out to be a painted plywood cutout. Even so, for a heartbeat, the mystery felt real! It was a playful moment that reminded us camping is about embracing the unexpected. Whether it’s a mythical creature or a simple cutout, the stories we create during our adventures make them unforgettable.
Camping Comforts
Camping here is a blend of planned moments and spontaneous surprises, all stitched together by fresh air and laughter. Having Torus Coffee Company freeze-dried snacks made it even better: light to carry, ideal for those rainy mornings, and just right after a fishless afternoon.
The best camping snacks can truly elevate your outdoor experience. Freeze-dried meals and treats are not just convenient; they’re delicious too.
Embracing the Elements
Iowa summers are known for their unpredictable weather, and this trip was no exception. From sunny afternoons to sudden storms, we learned to embrace the elements. Each day brought new adventures, whether huddling under the canopy during a downpour or soaking up the sun’s warmth.
This unpredictability is part of what makes camping so exciting.
Reflections on Nature
As the sun set over Lake McBride, painting the sky in vibrant tones of orange and pink, I found myself reflecting on the beauty all around. Camping helps us disconnect from our busy lives and reconnect with nature. The sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors create a sensory experience that calms the mind and uplifts the spirit.
The Final Word
If you need to slow down, breathe deep, and maybe meet a duck… or “Bigfoot”… Lake McBride and Coralville Dam are waiting. This trip was a beautiful reminder of the joys of camping — the laughter, the surprises, and the simple pleasures in life.
So pack your bags, grab your favorite snacks, and head out to explore the wonders of Iowa’s great outdoors.
🌀 Stay curious. Stay crunchy. Stay cosmic.
With love,
